Census Bureau that single motherhood is on the rise: Maria depicts her thoughts and actions seemingly without attempting to shed herself in a better light, thus revealing her doubts and lack of perfection with a refreshing candidness that immediately makes us warm to her. Chen feels that a single mother can do just as good a job of raising a child as two parents can. At 26, Jacqueline Encinias is at a much less established point in her career. When Damien, Jack's abusive father, who threatened more times than Maria cares to remember to kill her makes an unwelcome reappearance, she gets a wake-up call. She is a single mother and lives on a council estate in Manchester. But she sees it as more of a temporary career setback, and feels she's already getting back on track with her toddler now over age two.

I liked that it was different and that Maria really wasn't your average slummy mummy - I think being a younger mum to a junior school child gave the story a freshness and youth that you don't usually find in mum lit. Plus there was a lot more sex than you might expect too!

Maybe she just thought to hell with it we're having a good Christmas whatever the world throws at us and I can respect that but it did make me slightly less sympathetic to her previous complaints throughout the book was all. Her son was very sweet and actually I could relate to being 9 and realising that I was better off without my own Father being in my life.

I liked that at the end Maria ended up single and focusing on her life with her son and starting over - I guess that, that would be the case but actually she'd had enough unfortunate relationships and sex to take a break from both I think. Worth a read if you fancy something that looks like the norm but actually turns out to be quite different.
